Upgrading to a Heat Pump Water Heater is More Affordable Than Ever with New TECH Incentives

In a world where climate action and energy efficiency are becoming increasingly paramount, homeowners have a great opportunity to take advantage of Heat Pump Water Heater (HPWH) technology to reduce their carbon footprint. New incentives are available through TECH Clean California which can dramatically reduce the cost of switching from a traditional gas water heater to a HPWH. A HPWH is up to four times as efficient as a conventional gas water heater. Making the switch to a HPWH can cut your home’s carbon emissions by half.

Our nonprofit organization, SunWork Renewable Energy Projects, leverages a volunteer model to help make HPWH installations more affordable. Now the new TECH incentive program makes installing a HPWH even more affordable – typically significantly less than it would cost to replace your old water heater with a conventional gas water heater. SunWork is an approved contractor for the TECH incentives.

Free or Low Cost Upgrade in Many Locations While Incentives Last

In some Community Choice Energy (CCE) provider locations, the combination of incentives available can reduce the homeowner’s final cost to less than $500 and even to a final cost of zero in a couple of locations. The new TECH incentives began on October 31st. Some CCE providers are close to exhausting funding of their separate incentive programs which will limit the amount of savings available in those locations. At SunWork, we manage all the rebate paperwork for you and pass along the savings on your invoice. In addition, the Residential Energy Efficiency Tax Credit may help you save up to 30% off the installed cost when filing your Federal Tax Returns for qualified homeowners.

SunWork also recently announced a new HPWH Cost Estimator on our website. Just select the Community Choice Energy provider or Utility for your area, and the Estimator provides you instantly with a rough idea of what a 65-gallon or an 80-gallon HPWH installation would cost for your home. If you qualify for our program, we will of course provide you with a more formal estimate for your situation. We typically only replace gas water heaters in a garage location with an electrical panel close by. Find out if you qualify by filling out our request quote form here.

SunWork’s HPWH installation program is available in most of the San Francisco Bay Area where we’ve just completed our 100th HPWH installation. We’ve also recently begun installing HPWHs on the Central Coast in San Luis Obispo and Northern Santa Barbara Counties too (where we’ve been doing solar installations for over six years.)  Note that applications for a few of the CCE rebate programs such as 3CE, EBCE, and MCE have either closed or are expected to close in the near future (as of this writing on Nov. 1, 2023). The TECH incentive will still apply in these locations.

If you’re ready to embark on a journey towards a more sustainable and cost-effective home, SunWork can help you take the first step by installing a state-of-the-art, energy-efficient Heat Pump Water Heater. Learn more at SunWork.org.
