Heat Pump Water Heater Advantages

Discover the Benefits of a Heat Pump Water Heater for Your Home

Water heaters are an appliance most people don’t think much about until their water heater stops working or springs a leak. It’s widely recommended that you replace your water heater every 10 years to avoid emergencies. Now a heat pump water heater (HPWH) is an affordable option when you’re ready to replace your gas water heater, particularly with the availability of rebates and tax credits.

Installing a HPWH significantly reduces a home’s carbon footprint while also providing long-term savings. HPWHs heat water very efficiently by taking heat from the air and applying it to the water in the tank. This collection and concentration of existing heat from the environment makes HPWHs up to four times more efficient than conventional water heaters that use natural gas to heat water directly. Improved efficiency means savings, especially as natural gas costs rise. In addition, if you have extra solar panel capacity installed, you can effectively heat your water for free. When you upgrade your gas water heater to a HPWH, you also help to improve local air quality. Finally, installing a HPWH is a great starting point for home electrification.

How SunWork Can Help

SunWork Provides Expert Heat Pump Water Heater Installation Plus Additional Savings

SunWork’s HPWH installation program leverages our volunteer model to help make HPWH installations more affordable. Our nonprofit model educates volunteers interested in clean energy. Since volunteers help with our installations (often along with assistance from homeowners), our customers benefit from reduced labor costs. If you’d like to get a rough idea of how much it costs to install a heat pump water heater with SunWork, try our HPWH Cost Estimator.

Once you consider rebates and the federal tax credit, our HPWH installation costs are typically more affordable than replacing your unit with a conventional gas water heater. SunWork’s HPWH installations include all required electrical and plumbing work, permitting and inspection, and disposal of the old gas water heater. We manage all rebate paperwork and your invoice automatically reflects the savings. In addition, the Residential Energy Efficiency Tax Credit can help you save up to 30% off the installed cost when filing your Federal Tax Returns.

Customers get involved in the initial evaluation by providing photos and additional information about their current gas water heater setup. This helps save money for the homeowner since we can conduct an analysis of your project remotely and provide you with a proposal without the need to schedule a separate in-person appointment. We typically perform HPWH installations in a single day.

SunWork selects state-of-the-art equipment and designs its installation projects to ensure efficiency and safety. SunWork has significant electrical expertise from our solar operations. Our HPWH installations include the following features:

  • Natively wifi enabled (so you can program your HPWH from your phone or other device)
  • Thermostatic mixing valve included to optimize hot water capacity and safety
  • High efficiency into the 3.3 to 4.3 UEF efficiency range
  • We use only proven equipment brands such as Rheem®

Find Out If You Qualify

The SunWork heat pump water heater program is open to customers in the San Francisco Bay Area and the Central Coast who currently heat their water with a gas water heater. For our program, normally the current gas water heater is located in the garage with an electrical panel or subpanel close by. SunWork does not require a specific electricity bill or usage maximum or any income-related qualifications for this program (but additional rebate support for projects may be available for income-qualified customers).

We work on straightforward HPWH projects that can comfortably be completed in a single install day led by a SunWork staff member working with volunteer support. Our services do not currently include any auxiliary plumbing, electrical, or carpentry work, but we can potentially help with projects at sites where these are needed if the homeowner is able to take care of the needed improvements in advance. For detailed information about our eligibility requirements and possible exceptions, please review our detailed HPWH qualification criteria.

We are happy to evaluate whether you might be eligible for our program if you take a few minutes to fill out our qualifications form:

Steps to Getting a Heat Pump Water Heater

SunWork can help you through the qualifications process and once you are qualified, we provide turnkey HPWH installations including providing you with a proposal, equipment selection, permits, installation, rebate management, and old equipment removal. Below are the steps to installing a HPWH with SunWork.

1. Find Out if You Qualify

The first step is to fill out the “REQUEST QUOTE” form. This form walks you through the key criteria that we use to determine if your water heater replacement is something we are able to work on based on our technical requirements. For detailed information about our eligibility requirements and possible exceptions, please review our detailed HPWH qualifications here.

2. SunWork Provides Rough Estimate and Site Detail Request

If it looks like your project will likely meet our technical requirements, we will provide you with a rough estimate for your project (including applicable rebates).

3. Homeowner Provides Site Information

We appreciate your assistance in gathering a few measurements and photos of your current water heater, the room where it is located, and of your electrical panel. We’ll also provide you with a link to submit your electricity usage data which is needed for permitting. By sharing this information via email, you save us a site visit which helps reduce costs for our homeowners.

4. SunWork Provides Formal Quote
Based on the details and photos submitted in the previous step, our Project Lead verifies that we are able to help with your project and we will provide a formal quote and specific equipment recommendation based on your situation. This proposal is emailed to you a few days later along with a possible installation date.
5. Water Heater Installation
Once we agree on the proposal provided and you sign the SunWork agreement, your installation will be scheduled. At this point, building permits are issued, equipment is ordered, and volunteers are recruited for the installation.

The installation is completed in one day, usually on a weekend to accommodate homeowner and volunteer schedules. We welcome homeowner assistance with the project for those who are interested. After the installation is complete and your new HPWH is operating, we will help train you on the new equipment and will remove the old gas water heater.

6.Inspection and Payment
Your Project Lead is responsible for scheduling the inspection with your City or County and will meet you at your home for the inspection. The Project Lead also provides an invoice and collects payment, usually in the form of a check.
