Keeping Safe in Response to COVID-19

How SunWork is Keeping Safe During COVID-19

SunWork’s top priority is the safety of our customers, our volunteers, and our employees.

At SunWork, safety has always been our top priority. We are committed to reducing the risk of COVID-19 for our customers, our volunteers, and our employees in the communities we serve. Perhaps now more than ever, it is important to continue in our mission to help make solar more affordable and widespread with the help of trained volunteers. Everyone is spending more time at home so it becomes even more important to choose more economical and climate-friendly energy sources such as solar.

In response to the current health crisis, whenever possible, we are shifting our activities to be online instead of in person. We are offering virtual site surveys in some areas and are developing online versions of our workshops. Our sales operations are already conducted virtually — online and by phone. For facets of our operations that cannot be conducted remotely, we are working to take safety precautions to protect the health and safety of our customers, volunteers, and employees. Please review the information below which is focused on the key audiences we serve in the San Francisco Bay Area and the California Central Coast.

Prospective Customers

Our consultants are happy to talk with customers about SunWork and to provide solar estimates for their home or nonprofit. The best way to start the conversation is to fill out our Request Quote form. For additional information about going solar with SunWork, watch our Events section for a virtual Going Solar Workshop coming soon.

Once a new customer qualifies for SunWork and has received a rough estimate, the next step is to schedule a site survey. We can sometimes accommodate a virtual site survey (depending on home construction and shading, for example) if this is the customer’s preference.

When conducting in-person site surveys, we are taking extra safety precautions. These safety precautions include: maintaining physical distance, wearing face masks, proper sanitation and frequent handwashing or hand sanitizer use, and daily temperature checks for fever prior to starting on-site work. Fortunately, nearly all of our work is done outside, which also makes it easier to practice social distancing. Sometimes we need to enter a home to assess an interior electrical panel or investigate details of the roof construction. When this is required, we will utilize face masks and gloves as well as follow social distancing guidelines.

New Customers

Our solar installations typically take place on the weekend and we work with trained volunteers. During this health crisis, we are reducing the size of our volunteer teams participating each day in order to allow for faster and more efficient progress and to maximize the opportunity for social distancing. The Project Lead (who is a SunWork employee) is designated as the site-specific COVID-19 supervisor and is responsible for ensuring that all volunteers adhere to social distancing guidelines to the extent possible, and that all volunteers wear face masks, conduct proper sanitation and frequent handwashing or hand sanitizer use, and have their temperature checked for fever prior to starting work. Fortunately, nearly all of our work is done outside, which also makes it easier to practice social distancing. In the past, homeowners often provided lunch for volunteers, however, given current circumstances, we are asking volunteers to bring their own lunches. SunWork provides water, face masks, and hand sanitizer for the volunteers, and restricts tool usage between workers to maintain sanitation.

Current Customers

If you have a question about your system, please send an email to support@sunwork.org or call (650) 529-9918. Many issues can be resolved over the phone but if needed we are able to make service calls and will practice all guidelines regarding social distancing, face mask use, and appropriate sanitation procedures.

Volunteers

Safety is our top priority when working with our volunteers. We always conduct an orientation and training refresher at the beginning of our solar installation projects. In response to COVID-19, our Project Lead (who is a SunWork employee) conducts additional training which specifically addresses health and safety. We are keeping our volunteer teams smaller than usual to ensure volunteers can adhere to social distancing guidelines to the greatest extent possible. Volunteers who feel sick may not participate in projects. All volunteers will have their temperature checked for fever prior to starting work.

Face coverings are mandatory on site. Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own masks if they have one (as well as their own work gloves), but we will also have medical ear-loop face masks available on site. SunWork will provide hand sanitizer and will provide an individual set of labeled tools available for each volunteer who needs them for their installation tasks. Volunteers are requested to bring their own lunch. SunWork will provide water in single-serve containers and individually-wrapped light snacks.

Since our volunteer teams will be smaller than usual, and since most of our work is conducted outside, we will generally be able to maintain 6 feet of distance between workers, with possible rare exceptions for specific tasks (which volunteers can opt out of performing if preferred). We appreciate our dedicated volunteers and want to help keep everyone healthy and safe while participating in our projects.

Our regularly scheduled classroom volunteer trainings have been postponed indefinitely in response to COVID-19. We are working on creating an online version of our volunteer training. Please watch for announcements about online and classroom training on our Volunteers page. You can also sign up to be notified of upcoming training via email. Finally, if you’re interested in getting a head start on solar training, there are several online classes currently being offered, for example see these classes from Heatspring.

Employees

Our employees generally work from home offices so their in-person exposure to other staff is limited. When in the field, our employees are well versed in safety protocols and taking special care to use face masks and gloves as appropriate, to practice social distancing, and to avoid working if they are feeling ill or if they may have been exposed to the virus. Employees in the field participate in temperature checks for fever prior to starting on-site work. Permit offices are generally operating online so this limits exposure as well.

Thank you to our employees, volunteers, and customers for your understanding and cooperation as we all work to adapt to new circumstances created by the global COVID-19 pandemic. We strive to continue to provide affordable solar systems to our low-energy-footprint customers and provide our volunteers with learning opportunities and a way to give back to our communities.
